Boatworks 50

The Boatworks 50 is a high performance cruiser-racer, which has exhilarating performance, with her sleek racing-yacht looks and comprehensive, comfortable interior. She’s a boat we came up with after spending many years crossing the worlds ocean. The boat we felt would be the ideal yacht for short-handed high speed world cruising, a boat to be making a good 200 plus miles per day in the trades. She’s designed to be a fast, affordable alternative to the norm.

A hybrid style of yacht, which is fast, stable, light and very easy to handle.

Low tech construction, using timber and carbon composites, light weight cored ply’s, foam carbon bulkheads, we aim to make her both exciting and affordable.

“With a central core of racing-bred features such as the light displacement, large rig, and twin rudders, all simplified and made more robust to accommodate a cruising and light racing brief. The hull shape is slightly less beamy and with somewhat more volume than its racing sisters which makes it less demanding to sail with a more comfortable motion for little loss of speed. The 3 spreader rig has no need for backstays in its basic configuration, although a set can be fitted for long passages or more aggressive sailing, and can fly large masthead kites off its bowsprit.

The design features a number of novel design solutions: the bowsprit doubles as the anchor roller, keeping the rode away from the vertical stem, the halyards are brought back to a central winch between the drivers’ twin wheels, the saloon table is removable to fit on an identical removable hoop in the cockpit for Mediterranean summer living, and there are twin hatches aft over stowage space which open up to form a swim platform and boarding area for stern ties.” Mark Mills, Mills Design
